PRESA
NAHI is developing workable rewards for environmental services agreements in two landscapes of Rushebeya-Kanyabaha wetland and Wambabya riverine forestswithin the Albertine Rift associate site under the ICRAF-led PRESA project.
The Rushebeya-Kanyabaha wetland is found Kabale district Kigezi highlands
Wambabya riveline forests system is located in western Uganda, Hoima district in Bunyoro region. It lies in the forest corridor between Budongo and Bugoma forest reserves. NAHI categorized forests in this riverine system into different forest blocks based on their proximity to each other, for ease of identification and management. Forest blocks include: Itohya block, Ijumangabo block, Wambabya block, Mpalangasi block, Rwebikondo block, Rwamutonga block, Hoimo block, Hohwa block and Wambabya Central Forest Reserve. These blocks are reverine in nature, with slight characterizes unique to each block.
Project Goal:
Hundreds of thousands of smallholder farmers and residents living in the highlands of East and West Africa benefit from fair and effective agreements between stewards and beneficiaries of ecosystem services.
PRESA works at three levels: a community of practice at the regional level; engagement with private and public sector at the national level; and landscape-level engagement in core and associate landscapes in the four project countries (Guinea, Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda)
Specific Objectives of the Project
PRESA works to fulfill
Landscape-level engagement:
Objective: Foster the development, implementation and assessment of workable environmental service agreements in three core landscapes and four associate landscapes in the highlands of East and West Africa.
Policy and private-sector engagement
Objective: Catalyze policy support and private-sector participation in environmental service agreements in Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Guinea.
PRESA Community of practice
Generated and compiled information materials for creating awareness among potential ecosystem service sellers and buyers about PES-PRESA flier and PRESA poster
Land management practices in each landscape established. This helped to categorize degraded and well managed plots of the project sites
Taken the Geographical Positioning System (GPS) points for mapping the two project sites
Facilitated the formation and/or strengthening of local institutions that bring together potential ecosystem sellers for the two landscapes
Undertook a review of policy and legal terrain at global, national and sub national levels to facilitate the delivery of PES schemes in the two sites
Established a conceptual institutional structure that can facilitate the delivery of PES schemes in the two sites
Facilitating business linkages for natural resources products especially crafts
Markets Information generation for nature based enterprises– Bamboo, crafts, honey products
Designing a watershed management scheme for Rushebeya-Kanyabaha wetland and Wambabya riverine forests landscapes for provision of good quality and quantity of water for both industrial and domestic use
Engagement of stakeholders to proactively participate in the management of the two landscapes
