Market Based Mechanisms

Promoting market-based approaches for effective management and utilization of agricultural and natural resources

NAHI has over the years established foundations for promoting initiatives that empower and encourage communities to sustainably manage natural resources

Payments for Ecosystem Services (PES)

NAHI is one of the leading conservation organizations in facilitating the design and implementation of Payments for Ecosystem service (PES) schemes/projects through provision of expert knowledge and technical support in Uganda. NAHI has built a wealth of expertise over the years in the areas of carbon trade, payments for watershed services as well as biodiversity services.
PES provides a platform for ecosystem service beneficiaries as well as those whose operations impact and /or depend on ecosystems to provide incentives for their management. The platform has facilitated the understanding of PES as a conservation financing mechanism and is steadily attracting private companies in Uganda to contribute to management of ecosystems upon which their businesses depend or impact. PES promises to provide lasting solutions to sustained conservation financing which has overtime been a providence of donor support.

NAHI-The Facilitator: What we do to make PES deals happen

  •  Baseline establishment
  • Designing PES projects (payments for watershed services, payments for biodiversity services, carbon trade)
  • Mobilizing and aggregating sellers
  • Documentation of lessons learnt and best practices
  • Monitoring, Reporting and Verification of PES projects (MRV)
  • Generation and dissemination of information

Management of environmental footprint

NAHI supports private companies to design programs aiming to address their impacts and dependences on natural ecosystems. We work with private companies whose businesses depend and/or impact of natural ecosystems like forests, land and water resources. The program aims at engaging private companies to understand that their businesses can thrive with improved management of ecosystems; and undertake environmental business risk assessments with a view of developing action plans to avoid, mitigate and/or offset their environmental footprint.

What we do to help the private sector effectively manage their environmental foot print

  • Environmental risks and opportunities assessment
  • Development of risk management action plans and opportunities enhancement plans
  • Development of monitoring plans
  • Technical support for designing and implementation of projects derived from action plans

Nature-based enterprises for conservation and wealth creation

NAHI works with communities and businesses to undertake nature-based enterprises as a means of improving their livelihoods and incomes. Enterprises enable communities conserve and generate wealth from natural resources. Nature-based enterprises are a core component of all NAHI’s conservation activities and involve community groups, disadvantaged women and men and the youth
